Akbaş (literal meaning: "white head") or Akbaş Çoban Köpeği (literal meaning: "white head shepherd dog") refers to a molossoid shepherd dog type in Turkey with a continuously light coat.

description

The Akbaş has medium to long hair. The main color is plain milk to porcelain white. In studies of the Akbaş population in Turkey, the dogs had a mean mass of 44.9 kg and a shoulder height of 75.3 cm. The Akbaş has a strong innate protective behavior . His behavior is described as brave and loyal. In general, the dogs are reserved. But they are also very attentive and independent. An Akbaş can be very fast and persistent and, like many other livestock guardians , can effortlessly jump over a man-high fence. The Akbaş is similar to the Kangal , except for the color, but can be clearly distinguished from it genetically.

Spread, threat status

In Turkey, the Akbaş is mainly found in the provinces of Ankara , Afyon , Eskişehir and Konya . The population there is smaller than that in the USA, where the Akbaş is bred as a pedigree dog. There is also the Akbaş in Canada and the Netherlands.

Recognition as a breed

There is no recognition by the FCI as a dog breed . The recognition of the dog breed by the FCI is operated by the Turkish dog breeding association KIF . The breed of dog that is developed and bred on the basis of this type in Turkey is called Türk Çoban Köpeği Akbaş in the breed standard .

In the FCI there was the Anatolian Shepherd Dog until 2018 , whose standard allowed all colors, including black-headed and white dogs. Since 2018, however, it has been replaced by the Kangal Shepherd Dog, which no longer includes white dogs in the standard.
