Akira Iida ( Japanese 飯 田 章 , Ida Akira ; born December 18, 1969 in Kanagawa Prefecture ) is a former Japanese racing car driver .

Career

Akira Iida was particularly successful as a GT and sports car driver . After the Formula 3000 season in 1996 , he tried to establish himself in Formula Nippon for three years between 1997 and 1999 . After the third place behind Pedro de la Rosa and Takuya Kurosawa was the only result worth mentioning in the race at the Mine Circuit , he subsequently decided not to make any more monoposto appearances.

The decision to concentrate on GT and sports car racing resulted in six overall and 15 class wins in Japanese racing series. For many years he was a regular participant in the Super GT , where he won the overall standings in the GT 500 class in 2002 (at that time under the name All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship ). In 2013 he became the overall GTE winner in the Asian Le Mans Series . One of his successes in races without championship status was winning the Suzuka 1000 km race in 2002 .

In Europe, Iida competed several times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . He made his debut in 1994 and won the GT2 class on a Honda NSX in 1995 together with Keiichi Tsuchiya and Kunimitsu Takahashi .
