Action moor protection
The action moorland protection is a project to protect Moore in Lower Saxony . Through state-wide public relations work and political commitment, the campaign promotes the preservation and renaturation of various types of bog in north-west Germany .
It was founded in 2012 as an inter-association cooperation between the Osterholz Biological Station , the Manfred Hermsen Foundation and the BUND and NABU nature conservation associations in Lower Saxony and is based in Osterholz-Scharmbeck .

About 38 percent of the 18,000 km² low and raised bog areas are located in Lower Saxony. The federal state therefore has a special responsibility for moor protection. Nevertheless, the largest peat extraction areas in Central Europe are located here and the peat soils are largely degraded by intensive agricultural use .
Intact peat soils consist of organic material and are of great global relevance as carbon stores. In addition, numerous ecosystem functions are linked to intact moors, in addition to the climate protection aspect of a. the regulation of the soil water balance, substance filter function, flood protection, biodiversity. Intact moors provide habitats for rare animal and plant species and are archaeological research sources.
According to the state government of Lower Saxony, drained, degraded bog soils cause around 13 percent of the greenhouse gases in the land. The preservation of near-natural bog soils and the rewetting of degraded bog soils contribute to a. efficiently contributes to climate protection .

In the run-up to the state elections in Lower Saxony in 2013 , Aktion Moorschutz made demands on state politicians. Moor protection was anchored in the new government program. The alliance continues to act in an advisory and demanding role for a new peatland protection program in Lower Saxony, for the reduction of intensive farming on bog soils and an intensification of efforts to protect this habitat.
