Action emergency entrance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The emergency entrance campaign is an anti-racist initiative that draws attention to racism and calls for solidarity with the victims of racist attacks. For this purpose, shops, bars and institutions are addressed, with the sticker of the campaign in the entrance area to make it clear that the staff does not tolerate racist behavior and will protect potential victims if necessary.

development

The campaign originated in Berlin in the early 1990s as a reaction to increasing racist attacks. Various anti-racist and anti-fascist initiatives, based on the SOS Racism group that existed for a short time in Berlin, turned to appropriate institutions and advertised for the stickers to be displayed. In 1995 members of the Berliner Jugend- Antifa “Edelweißpiraten” took over the lead. Two years later, as part of a surrounding area campaign, Brandenburg initiatives for this approach were also addressed.

The 1998 campaign was particularly well received by young people from Bernau . The reasons for setting up this project were clearly racially motivated attacks in which, among others, a Gambier and a Vietnamese were attacked and injured in broad daylight in Bernau. Out of these events the need arose to draw attention to the increasing number of racially motivated attacks, to show solidarity with those affected and possibly to create support options for those who suffer. The starting point was to design a concept for action that addressed the problem of racist attacks in the long term. The action should enable a broad public discussion within society and the identification of concrete options for action against the right-wing mainstream .

There are now nationwide initiatives that continue the emergency entrance campaign - including in Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. They are partially supported by politicians - the Saxon campaign in Mittweida , for example , was able to win over Wolfgang Thierse as patron.

As a rule, there are broad alliances of anti-racist groups with some church, political, trade union or undogmatic background.

functionality

As part of the project, shopkeepers, restaurant and gas station operators, branch managers, those responsible for cultural, church and social facilities and other institutions are addressed. Major supporters of the project include a. since 2001 the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe and several Berlin district offices. You will be introduced to the “Emergency Input Action” in a conversation, and you will receive a written explanation, the stickers for the action, a list of important contact telephone numbers and addresses, a questionnaire and information on how to behave in the event of direct violence.

Due to the large number of different groups that carry out the action - usually independently of one another - there is very different material. The original sticker was a yellow circle with the words “Aktion Notingang” or “We offer protection against racist attacks”. Later some information was added and it was in A4 format. With the takeover of the project outside of Berlin, new symbols were created, especially based on the mirrored pictogram of the emergency exit with a green or red background. Depending on the region, brief information about the campaign has been added in different languages.

The main focus is on the sticker. By means of the stickers that are attached to the entrance doors of the shops and public buildings, people potentially affected by racist and fascist-motivated violence should be publicly signaled protection and help from business people and public agencies. In the event of an assault, the person seeking help should be offered protection by creating a public sphere until the situation has eased.

Awards

The Bernauer Action Noteingang was awarded the Aachen Peace Prize in 2000 . In 2007 the initiative in Mittweida received the Ernst Engelbrecht Greve Prize and the "Democracy Prize of the SPD parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament. In 2008 the same group was awarded the" Active for Democracy and Tolerance "prize from the Federal Ministry of the Interior .

criticism

The political instrumentalisation by parties is criticized in part. There is also the problem that the stickers have to be maintained, i.e. the operators of the hanging rooms have to be informed regularly and in the long term about the purpose of the action. When there are several websites of local initiatives, it becomes clear that these have not existed for a long time and that the emergency entry campaign is probably no longer maintained on site.
