particularities | Highest point in the Lebanon Mountains |
The mountain al-Qurnat as-Sauda (also Qurnat as-Sawda ' , Qurnat as Sawda' , Qornet es Saouda or Karnat as Sauda ; Arabic القرنة السوداء, DMG al-Qurnat as-saudāʾ for Black Horn ) is 3,088 m high and forms the highest point of the Lebanon Mountains and thus also the state of Lebanon . The mountain lies on the border between the Governorate of North Lebanon and the Governorate of Baalbek-Hermel . In addition to the actual Qurnat as-Sauda, there are at least three other identically named secondary peaks within a 15 km radius.
The summit area of Qurnat as-Sauda consists of partly sandy, partly stony flat peaks. In summer the mountain is grazed by flocks of sheep up to the summit area. The summit is also considered a hiking destination.
The summit can be reached via a winding slope from the summer village of Ehden , which is a good 20 km away . In good weather, the Mediterranean Sea, about 25 km away, can be seen.
During the winter the summit is covered with snow and ice. The Cedars resort is used for skiing . Four ski and chair lifts lead up to Jabal El Makmel at 2817 m , 5 km southwest of the summit of Qurnat as-Sauda. One of the last cedar forests in the Lebanon Mountains is located near the valley station .
