The al-Watan party ( Arabic حزب الوطن Hizb al-Watan , French Parti Al Watan ; the Arabic word al- Watan can be translated as “fatherland”, “homeland” or “nation”) is a Tunisian political party with a centrist tendency.

history

The founding of the Al-Watan party was announced on February 19, 2011 , and its official approval took place on March 9 of the same year.

It was founded after the Tunisian Revolution by personalities from previous ministerial circles , including Mohamed Jegham and Ahmed Friaâ . The latter come from the ranks of the Constitutional Democratic Collection (RCD) of the ousted President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali . On June 13, Friaâ announced his exit from the party after being criticized and cited as an obstacle to the party's progress.

The Al-Watan party then experienced a conflict between Jegham and Mohamed Béchir Mehalla . Both organized an extraordinary congress and proclaimed themselves legitimate general secretary. In the election for the Constituent Assembly in October 2011, Jegham allied himself with the Parti réformiste destourien and the Parti de l'avenir within the list cadre of a National Union, which, however, received no seats; Mehalla, however, presented an independent list in Monastir under the name Assedq (sincerity), which received very few votes.

On December 5, Jegham announced the formation of a new party called the Free Fatherland , which he will chair. This happened as a result of massive resignations from the party and the establishment of a new formation of many resigned members under the name of Al Watan .
