The Alabama State Route 20 (abbreviated AL 20 ) is a state highway in the US state of Alabama , which runs east-west direction.

The State Route begins on Tennessee State Route 69 north of Florence on the Tennessee border and ends 135 kilometers near Mooresville on Interstates 65 and 565 .

From the border with Tennessee, the State Route initially runs in a southeast direction and meets US Highways 43 and 72 and Alabama State Routes 17 and 157 in the city of Florence . After crossing the Tennessee River , the road runs parallel to the river in an easterly direction together with the US 72. In Town Creek , the AL 20 is crossed by the Alabama State Route 101 and in the east of Courtland , the Alabama State Route 33 branches off.

In the greater Decatur area , the State Route meets US Highway 31 and Alabama State Route 67 . To the northeast of the city, the road crosses the Tennessee River again and ends after about two kilometers at a cross with Interstates 65 and 565.

history

Alabama State Route 20 opened in 1929 between Margerum and Tuscumbia . After eleven years, the line was extended to Huntsville in 1940 . In 1957, the State Route took over the stretch of the former Alabama State Route 2 to the border with the state of Tennessee. The east end of the State Route was initially moved to Madison in 2000 and again to the intersection between Interstate 65 and 565 in 2005.
