Alain Rousset

Alain Rousset (born February 16, 1951 in Chazelles-sur-Lyon , Loire department ) is a French politician of the Parti socialiste . Since 1998 he held the post of the President of the Regional Council of Aquitaine (Aquitaine) held since 2016, he has the corresponding position in the new region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

Life and politics

Alain Rousset studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (IEP Paris). He obtained his first political office in 1988 as a general councilor in the Gironde department . From 1989 to 2001 he was mayor of Pessac , a city in the greater Bordeaux area . In the regional elections in 1998, the list of Parti socialiste won with him as the top candidate of the Aquitaine region (Aquitaine) and he became president of the regional council. In this office he was confirmed in the subsequent regional elections in 2004 and 2010.

From 2007 he was also a member of the French National Assembly as a member of the 7th constituency of the Gironde department, elected with around 60% of the votes (re-elected in 2012). After the merger of Aquitaine with Limousin and Poitou-Charentes to form the greater region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine , Rousset was elected president in the second ballot with 44.3%. Due to the new rules against the accumulation of offices, he did not run for the 2017 parliamentary election .
