Alajos Szokolyi
Alajos Szokolyi [ ˈɒlɒjoʃ ˈsokoji ] (Slovak: Alojz Sokol or German Aloisius Szokol ; born June 19, 1871 in Kisgaram , Austria-Hungary , today Hronec , Slovakia ; † September 9, 1932 in Bernecebaráti, Hungary ) participated in the first Summer Olympics in 1896 in Athens .
He and the American Francis Lane came third for the Kingdom of Hungary in the 100-meter run with a time of 12.6 seconds. In 1896 the third of a competition was left empty-handed. The first got a silver and the second a bronze medal. The timekeepers for the 100 m run only stopped the time for the first two. The remaining times were estimated. In the first elimination race of the 100-meter competition, he finished second behind Lane with a time of 12.75 seconds.
In the triple jump he was fourth with a distance of 12.30 m. In the first elimination race of the 110-meter hurdles he was second behind the Briton Grantley Goulding . With this place he qualified for the final run, in which he did not start.
In 1896 he became Hungarian champion over 100 yards .
