Alan Borwell
Alan Peter Borwell (born August 11, 1937 in York (England)) is a Scottish chess official . From 1996 to 2003 he was President of the International Correspondence Chess Federation ICCF .
Functionary career
Scottish Correspondence Chess Federation
Borwell was president of the Scottish correspondence chess association SCCA from 1977 to 1997 (successor was 1997 David Kilgour). From January 1980 he published its bulletin SCCA Magazine . After 72 issues, he passed the reins to Iain Mackintosh in 2000.
World Correspondence Chess Federation ICCF
Since 1981 he has represented the SCCA at all congresses of the ICCF. On January 1, 1984, he became a member of the ICCF Presidium and dealt with the revision of the statutes. In particular, he laid the foundations for future remote e-mail tournaments. In 1984 he took over the office of treasurer which he held until 1995. In early 1996 he became vice president. In September 1997 the ICCF Congress in Buenos Aires elected him president to succeed Henk Mostert . In 2003, Borwell was replaced by Josef Mrckvicka and appointed honorary president by the ICCF.

Between 1954 and 1964 he was Club Master of York several times. At a simultaneous event, he succeeded in defeating Paul Keres . In 1964 he contributed to winning the English team championship on board 3 of his team. In the individual championship of East Scotland he was second in 1965, a year later he finished in the middle of the British championship in Sunderland (5.5 / 11).
Correspondence chess
Borwell's first significant success in correspondence chess was winning the English team championship in correspondence chess 1961/62 (Postal Chess Club Championship in the British Postal Chess League). Further successes were reaching the semi-finals at the 15th and 19th FS World Championships and winning the bronze medal at the 11th FS Olympics with the Scottish team. In 1993 he was awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Master by the ICCF .
Private
Borwell has lived in Inchture, Perthshire , Scotland, since 1965 . Until his retirement in 1997 he worked for an insurance company. He is married to his wife Moira and has 2 children (son Niall, daughter Claire).
