Alan J. Bishop

Alan J. Bishop (born October 14, 1937 ) is a British - Australian mathematics educator and professor at Cambridge University and Monash University in Australia.

Life

Bishop studied math and science at the University of Southampton with a bachelor's degree in 1961 and Loughborough College with a degree in education in 1962. He then continued his studies at Harvard University , where he received a master's degree in education in 1964. He received his PhD from the University of Hull in 1969 and was then in the Faculty of Education at Cambridge University, where he developed and supervised programs for masters and doctoral programs in mathematics education. In 1992 he became a professor of education at Monash University, where he headed the mathematics, science and technology department. In 2002 he retired. In 2006 he was a visiting fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge.

During a sabbatical year in Papua New Guinea in 1977, he began to be interested in the cultural background of mathematics and mathematics lessons, which his book Mathematical Enculturation , published in 1988, was about.

He was President of the British Mathematical Association , a founding member of the British Educational Research Association and a member of the Mathematics Education Committee of the Royal Society and a representative of the United Kingdom on the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction . He was a founding member and co-director of the international research group Basic Components of Mathematics Education for Teachers (BACOMET) and was in the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education .

In 2015 he received the Felix Klein Medal .

From 1979 to 1989 he was editor of the journal Educational Studies in Mathematics, founded by Hans Freudenthal . In 1980 he founded the book series Mathematics Education Library at Kluwer (now Springer). He was editor-in-chief of the International Handbook of Mathematics Education (1996) and the Third International Handbook of Mathematics Education (2013).

He is a British and Australian citizen.
