Alan Kelly ( Irish Alan Ó Ceallaigh , born July 13, 1975 in Limerick , County Limerick ) is an Irish politician and has been a member of the Dáil Éireann since 2011 . Before that, he was a member of the Seanad Éireann from 2007 to 2009 and a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2011 . From July 2014 to May 2016 he was Deputy Leader of the Irish Labor Party, succeeding Joan Burton , who was elected new party leader in 2014. In May 2016, he failed in the attempt to succeed the party leader Joan Burton, who resigned after the Labor Party defeat on February 26, 2016. Following the resignation of Brendan Howlin , Kelly was elected as the new leader of the Irish Labor Party in April 2020.

Kelly studied English and History at University College Cork . In 1995 he received his BA Hons there. , and an M.Phil. Hons. in political science. He then attended Boston College until 1999 and finally University College Dublin .

In 2007 Kelly, who was long active in the Irish Labor Party , was named Eireann for his party in the 23rd Seanad . This he was a member until he at the European elections in Ireland in 2009 in the European Parliament was elected. In the December 2009 by-election for his vacant seat in the Seanad Éireann, the Green Party candidate , Niall Ó Brolcháin , was elected.

In the European Parliament was a member of the Kelly Group S & D and belonged to the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection on. In 2011 he was elected to the Dáil Éireann in the early general election in Ireland and then stepped down from the European Parliament. After the cabinet reshuffle on July 12, 2014, he was Minister of the Environment and the Interior until the parliamentary elections on February 26, 2016. In the election he was one of the seven of the previous 37 MPs who returned to parliament.
