Alan Gregory Clayton Smith (born February 14, 1957 ) is the tenth bishop of the Anglican Diocese of St. Albans in St Albans, founded in 1877 .

Life

Smith studied at the University of Birmingham and the University of Wales . After ordination in 1981, he worked in various parishes. In 2001 he was named regional bishop of Shrewsbury within the Lichfield Diocese and received episcopal ordination . In 2002 he obtained his doctorate . On September 19, 2009 he was instituted as Diocesan Bishop of St. Albans.

One focus of his work is life and faith in rural areas .

Smith is one of the group of ten Anglican bishops who voted in the spring of 2011 for the alternative vote in the election of the members of the House of Commons and thus for the reform of the exclusive majority suffrage.

On October 3, 2013, Smith became a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord in his capacity as Bishop of St. Albans . On November 4, 2013, with the assistance of Jonathan Gledhill , Bishop of Lichfield , and Christopher Hill , Bishop of Guildford , he was officially inducted into the House of Lords.
