Christopher Herbert
Christopher William Herbert (born January 7, 1944 in Lydney in the Forest of Dean ) is a British Anglican theologian and former Bishop of St Albans .
life and career
Coming from a forwarding family, he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Wales in Lampeter (-1965), the Konvikt in Wells (-1967) and graduated from the University of Bristol after graduating from school in Monmouth (1954–1962) . After his ordination in 1967 he was curate and assistant teacher in Tupsley Hereford (1967–1971). After his work as an advisor in religious education (1971-1976) and as director of education for the Diocese of Hereford (1976-1981), he was vicar (1981-1990) in a town near Farnham in Surrey . In 1990 he became ministerial director, archdeacon of Dorking, and canon of honor of Guildford Cathedral . In 1995 he was called to be Bishop of St. Albans .
During his tenure as diocesan bishop, he served as chairman of the Council of Christians and Jews in Great Britain. Sitting in the House of Lords since 1999 , his main field of activity was health and medical ethics . He was a member of a selection committee that collected and questioned proposals to amend the law on euthanasia and assisted suicide . In 2008 he received his doctoral degree PhD at the University of Leicester .
On his 65th birthday, he resigned from his office as bishop. He is married and has two grown sons. On an honorary note, he still serves as bishops' representative in Guildford, Chichester, Salisbury and Winchester.
