The Alatna Valley is an ice-free valley in East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is 6.5 km north of Mount Gran and extends in an east-northeast orientation over a length of 16 km along the southeast flank of the Convoy Range .
The American geologist Parker Emerson Calkin (1933-2017) from Tufts University undertook stratigraphic studies here from 1960 to 1961 . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the valley in 1963 after the USNS Alatna , a tanker used in Operation Deep Freeze in 1958–1959 and 1958–1960 .
