Alban Gerster

Alban Gerster (born December 26, 1898 in Laufen , Switzerland; † March 12, 1986 ) was a Swiss architect and archaeologist.

Gerster studied architecture, art history and archeology at the ETH Zurich . In 1924 he opened an architecture office in Laufen. From 1933 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1970 Gerster received the Dr. hc from the University of Bern for his services in monument preservation and archeology.

In his architectural work, the preservation of monuments took an important place, u. a. the restoration of the castle and the Jesuit church in Porrentruy (1962–1967), the Capuchin monastery in Dornach (1966–1967), the Hauterive monastery (canton Friborg, 1968–1974) and the church of St. Catherine in Laufen 1971.

Gerster was a member of the Bernese Commission for Monument Preservation . As a lover and connoisseur of archeology, Gerster privately researched the remains of Roman buildings such as the Roman estate Müschhag near Laufen or the building of the Roman house in Augst BL (replica of a Roman villa, serves as a museum within the ruins of Augusta Raurica ).
