Location of the municipality | |
Augst ( Swiss German : Augscht [ aʊkʃt ]) is a municipality in the Liestal district of the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland . The municipality was previously called Baselaugst - to distinguish it from the neighboring municipality of Kaiseraugst in the canton of Aargau . The border between Germany and Switzerland runs in the middle of the Rhine near Augst .
geography
The municipality of Augst is 275 m above sea level. M. at the northeastern end of the canton of Basel-Landschaft . The village extends over the gravel terrace on both sides of the Ergolz , which flows into the Rhine north of Augst. The Violenbach reaches the Ergolz near Augst . The Violenbach follows the canton border between the Basel area and the canton Aargau from its source on Halmet to Augst; from the confluence of the Violenbach in the Ergolz the border lies in this river to the Rhine.
To the west of the village, a narrow, approximately two and a half kilometer long bank strip on the Rhine belongs to Augst. The Augst-Wyhlen hydropower plant is located in this area .
Between the Ergolz and the Violenbach there is a plain about a square kilometer on which the higher quarters of the Roman city of Augusta Raurica stood.
The main road 3 from Basel to Rheinfelden and the Bözberg railway line run through the village . On the south side of the ancient city area, the A 2 motorway crosses the municipality in a west-east direction, and at the "Augst" junction, the A 3 motorway leaves the A 2 route, which it followed from Basel, and crosses the canton border to Rheinfelden.
The pier Augst BL Kraftwerk der Rheinschifffahrt is located near the power plant .
history
The name Augst goes back to the Roman town of Augusta Raurica , located on the terrace spur between Ergolz and Violenbach from the 1st to the 3rd century .
In the Middle Ages , the Augst settlement was formed on the Ergolzbrücke, where the customs and a mill were located.
In 1431, knight Hans Reich von Reichenstein sold the village of Augst to Henman Offenburg of Basel with the consent of King Sigismund .
In 1442 the municipality of Augst was divided up and the part of the village on the right side of the Violenbach came to Austria with the Rheinfelden rule and was henceforth called Kaiseraugst . The part of the village on the left bank came into the possession of the city of Basel with the rule of Farnsburg in 1461 and has since been called Baselaugst or just Augst.
coat of arms
On a red background a silver lion head with a golden tongue and a golden crown. This is the coat of arms of the noblemen Pfirter von Liestal , who collected the bridge toll on the Ergolz in Augst in the 14th century .
Attractions
