Sir Albemarle Bertie, 1st Baronet KCB (born January 20, 1755 , † February 24, 1824 ) was a British admiral and one of the commanders during the Mauritius campaign .

Early years

His youth are largely in the dark, only the date of his promotion to lieutenant in December 1777 at the age of 22 is known. He spent part of the American War of Independence in French captivity after his frigate HMS Fox was captured. It was not until 1782 that he served again in the Royal Navy as captain of the HMS Crocodile . He married between 1780 and 1790 and had two daughters with his wife Emma. His wife was the daughter of a fourth cousin of Peter Heywood 's father , making Bertie distantly related to a participant in the mutiny on the Bounty . At the same time he was a judge in the trial relating to this mutiny, in which Heywood was also accused.

Later years

In 1790 Bertie got HMS Latona during a mobilization of the Royal Navy because of a conflict with Spain , in 1792 he was transferred to HMS Edgar , in 1793 to HMS Thunderer . With HMS Thunderer Bertie took part in the naval battle of the Glorious First of June . For the next ten years, Bertie stayed with the Canal Fleet and commanded the ships of the line HMS Thunderer , HMS Renown , HMS Windsor and HMS Malta . In 1804 he was appointed Rear Admiral, in 1807 he became Commander in Chief at the Cape of Good Hope . In this capacity he was also responsible for the Mauritus campaign. Although only in the combat zone since September 1810, Bertie later earned the most laurels and was elevated to Hereditary Baronet , of the Navy, on December 9, 1812 , although another admiral - Admiral William O'Bryen Drury - protested as he was more entitled to it reported. The decision went in favor of Bertie.

After 1812 Bertie no longer had its own command, but was promoted to admiral on June 4, 1814 . On January 2, 1815, he was inducted into the Bath Order as Knight Commander . When he died in 1824, his baronet title expired for lack of male descendants.
