Albert Baernstein II
Albert Baernstein II (born April 25, 1941 in Birmingham, Alabama , † June 10, 2014 in University City ) was an American mathematician .
Baernstein initially studied at the University of Alabama , but after a year moved to Cornell University , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1962. After working for an insurance company for a year, he continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , where he received his master's degree in 1964 and his doctorate in 1968. From 1968 to 1972 he was an assistant professor at Syracuse University , then he became a professor at Washington University in St. Louis , where he remained until his retirement in 2011.
The main area of work of Baernstein was analysis, especially function theory . Here he was particularly interested in symmetrization problems. His most important contribution here is the Baernstein * function that is named after him today. Originally he had introduced this to solve an extremal problem of the Nevanlinnaschen value distribution theory posed by Edrei . Later he and others applied it to various other problems.
In 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Helsinki ( How the * -function solves extremal problems ).
