Albert Hassall (born February 11, 1862 in Woolwich , † September 18, 1942 ) was a zoologist who came from Great Britain and was active in the USA. The focus of his work was on parasitology .

Life

Albert Hassall was a native of England. He received his education in private schools and then studied at the Royal Veterinary College in London . From 1887 he worked for the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in Baltimore and thus belonged to the US Department of Agriculture . In 1891 he became an assistant in the department of pathology , in 1904 in the zoological department, and from 1928 to 1932 he was deputy head of the zoological department. Then he was forced to retire.

His main activities included helping zoologist Charles Wardell Stiles to set up the zoological department's parasite collection. In 1892 the two scientists' personal collections of parasites formed the basis. In the first few years the collection was called the BAI Collection. In 1894, Stiles was authorized by the Smithsonian Institution to establish a US National Museum Helminthological Collection. The collection was later merged with a similar collection from the US Public Health Service, which eventually evolved into the US National Parasite Collection. This is still being supplemented and is now in the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution.

Hassall and Stiles compiled the Index-Catalog of Medical and Veterinary Zoology . This catalog was published in portions from 1902 onwards. Hassall was honored for his work on it in 1932 by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London.

After Hassall had given up his professional activity for the Bureau of Animal Industry in July 1932, he continued to work on the catalog free of charge until his death. For this he received the title “Collaborator on the Index Catalog”.
