Kümmel-Schnur is a recognized specialist for classical modernism (1890–1930) , initially through his dissertation on Musil , but also his work on the origin of the term media . He dealt intensively with mathematical information theory and, together with Erhard Schüttpelz, established the concept of disturbance as a fundamental media-theoretical analysis tool. Another field of work is German-speaking Spiritism in particular and, derived from it, the terms and practices of trance and obsession . One result of this discussion is the lecture performance NOISE SPIRITS, which Kümmel-Schnur collaborates with Manuel Stettner for the Kingdom of Darkness Festival des théâtre brut . Another focus of Kümmel-Schnur's work is the cultural and media history of technical devices , including the history of video telegraphy and analogue telephony .

Albert Kümmel-Schnur was very committed to university teaching. He developed numerous new teaching formats for the Literature-Art-Media course at the University of Konstanz, which he largely designed in terms of content. He integrated the student working group Campus-TV 2004 into the course literature-art-media, which today works under the title media.lab.
