Albert Klotz (born April 6, 1812 in Halle (Saale) ; † April 21, 1894 there ) was a German teacher for the deaf .

Life

Klotz was born the son of a master potter . He completed his apprenticeship training at the Royal Teachers' College in Weißenfels . There he also received additional training in teaching the deaf and mute .

In 1834 he became a teacher at the "United City School" in Halle. At the same time he began teaching deaf and dumb children, initially in his private apartment.

At the beginning of 1835, Klotz founded a private institute for the deaf and dumb, which later became the institution for the deaf and dumb in Halle. In 1836 he got his own classroom on Rathausstrasse. From 1839 adults could also take part in lessons for the deaf. From 1841 Albert Klotz was a teacher at the community school .

Through donations and the sale of copperplate engravings that Klotz had made with his students, the university was able to purchase a house on Jägerplatz in 1845, which was used as a school building until 1908. In 1848 the house became a Sunday school for adult deaf people. In 1874 a Russian teacher came to study.

After Klotz retired at the beginning of 1890, the previously privately run institution was transferred to the administration of the Province of Saxony . In 55 years of service, Klotz trained over 400 deaf people.

Albert Klotz's resting place is in the Laurentiusfriedhof at Neumarkt in Halle (Saale).

State education center for the hearing impaired

Until 1982 the students were taught at Jägerplatz. In the same year the “Albert Klotz” school for the deaf and the “KE Ziolkowski” school for the hearing impaired were merged to form a school for the hearing impaired. The building was in the southern part of Halle, on Jamboler Strasse. The boarding school that went with it was not far away and could accommodate around 150 students. Today the LBZ for the hearing impaired is located at Murmansker Straße 12. It is a new building with a student dormitory. There are currently 150 students studying at the school.
