Albert Loritz

Albert Loritz (born November 13, 1953 in Rot near Laupheim ; † December 15, 2018 in Würzburg ) was a German arranger and composer . The focus of his work was on the transcription of classical music for wind ensembles and symphonic wind orchestras .

Live and act

After Loritz graduated from high school in St. Wendel in 1972, he studied school music from 1972 to 1978 at the Freiburg University of Music with the main subject organ and music theory / composition. Formative teachers were Peter Förtig , Lars Ulrich Abraham and Klaus Huber . He also studied musicology and at the University of Freiburg with Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht and Werner Breig, among others . During his time in Freiburg, he directed the large wind orchestra of the Freiburg-Zähringen music association from 1978 to 1993 . From 1977 to 1981 he was also active as a church musician , organist and choir director in Gundelfingen .

Loritz is best known for his well-founded and carefully worked out transfers of baroque and romantic music for modern wind instrumentation. His version of the " Fireworks Music " by Georg Friedrich Handel and his Bach arrangements for wind orchestra are particularly appreciated .

In the 80s, Albert Loritz was one of the most important lateral thinkers in the German brass music scene. In advanced training courses and magazine articles, he mainly commented on questions of the repertoire, program design and instrumentation and turned against kitsch and the influence of the “Hollywood sound” in brass orchestra literature. A major concern for him is the integration of the saxophone as an equal classical instrument in the wind instrumentation. In the last few years he has developed a model of a saxophone orchestra with five voices and a choir.

His main job was as a music teacher from 1978 to 2017 . Stations of his activity were high schools in Freiburg , Osterburken and Neckarsulm . Most recently he was a music teacher at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium Neckarsulm , where he and Annette Kutzer led the school's orchestra, the VARIOSAX saxophone orchestra. This ensemble is now based in Schöntal Abbey as a private project orchestra .

The desire to experiment with unusual chamber music ensembles led to the creation of the ensembles “6 mal anders”, “saxoforte”, “ensemble polychrome” and “saxcultur”. Together with his wife Annette Kutzer (violin, soprano / tenor saxophone) and musicians friends, Albert Loritz (baritone saxophone, bass / double bass clarinet, arrangements) works out unusual programs, often with references to literary, church or cultural history.
