The school emerged from an independent Latin school (from 1814). From 1842 it was a secondary school for young men for trade, industry and commerce. In 1929 the school acquired the right to hold the final secondary school leaving examination. In 1953 it became a Progymnasium . In 1955, what was then the Progymnasium started with an 11th grade and was expanded to a full institution by a resolution in the same year.
In May 1960 a new building was put into operation at the current location in the city park, and in this context the school was also named Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium . In 1972 a new building was added to the school building on the Sulm . In the 1979/1980 school year the number of pupils rose to 1,639. In October 2008, the school was expanded to include a further building with 900 square meters of usable space, in which the cafeteria with 120 seats, an internet café , a play and reading room, two specialist rooms for the subject of "science and technology" with modern media technology and two further classrooms are housed.
