Sir Albert McQuarrie ( January 1, 1918 - January 13, 2016 ) was a conservative politician of the Scottish Conservative Party .

Life

McQuarrie attended two schools in Greenock before entering the Royal College of Science and Technology , a precursor to the University of Strathclyde . He served in World War II and founded the company A McQuarrie & Son in 1946 , which he managed until 1988 and which then traded under the name Albert McQuarrie & Associates Ltd. In 2013, at the age of 95, McQuarrie published his memoir .

Political career

In the postwar period, McQuarrie became a councilor for the City of Gourock . For the general election in 1966 , the Scottish Conservative Party placed him in the constituency of Kilmarnock . However, McQuarrie could not prevail against the Labor candidate Willie Ross . He ran again in the general election in October 1974 , but this time in the constituency of Caithness and Sutherland . Again he missed the entry into the British House of Commons .

In the constituency of Aberdeenshire East he managed a narrow victory in the 1979 elections before the SNP candidate Douglas Henderson , whereupon McQuarrie moved into the House of Commons for the first time. Before the 1983 general election , the Aberdeenshire East constituency was dissolved and McQuarrie ran in one of the two newly created successor constituencies, Banff and Buchan . Again he won the mandate against Henderson and thus kept his seat in parliament. In the 1987 elections, however, he was defeated by the SNP candidate, later First Minister Alex Salmond , and left the House of Commons.
