Albert Niemann (pediatrician)

Albert Niemann (born February 23, 1880 in Berlin ; † March 22, 1921 there ) was a German pediatrician . He is the first to describe the Niemann-Pick disease .

Life

Albert Niemann was the son of the opera singer Albert Niemann (1831-1917) and his second wife, the actress Hedwig Raabe . He studied medicine at the universities of Berlin , Freiburg and Strasbourg and received his doctorate in Strasbourg . From 1908 to 1918 he worked at the Berlin University Children's Clinic. In 1919, Niemann took over the management of an infant home in Berlin-Halensee , and the following year he was given an extraordinary professorship in paediatrics.

Act

In 1914, Niemann was the first to describe a case of what later became the Niemann-Pick disease. This "lipoid cell splenohepatomegaly type Niemann" was histopathologically differentiated from Gaucher disease by Ludwig Pick in 1926 and later named after the two doctors.

Albert Niemann published a textbook on paediatrics in 1920.
