Albert Sharpe (born April 15, 1885 in Belfast , † February 13, 1970 there ) was an Irish actor .

life and career

Albert Sharpe began his show career as an assistant to magicians before he joined Frank Benson 's theater company and learned the art of acting there. For many years he appeared as a comedian duo with his partner Joe Carney on vaudeville stages across Europe. Sharpe later turned back to more serious roles and became a member of the renowned Abbey Theater in London. His acting career did not become spectacular until 1947, when he took on the lead role of Finian McLonergan in the premiere of the successful musical Finian's Rainbow by EY Harburg and Burton Lane on Broadway . In the 1968 film adaptation , Fred Astaire took on the role of Sharpe.

Finian's Rainbow was Sharpe's first and only appearance on Broadway, but earned him a lot of attention and first roles in Hollywood. He often played prominent supporting characters with a Scottish or Irish influence, for example a patriotic Irish bar owner in Jenny (1948) alongside Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones and a Scot with two daughters in Brigadoon (1954) alongside Gene Kelly and Van Johnson . Sharpe is best known today for his leading role in the Disney film The Secret of the Haunted Cave from 1959. Walt Disney remembered him from Finian's Rainbow and personally persuaded Sharpe, who is actually already retired, to play the role. He spent the last ten years of his life in retirement in his hometown of Belfast, where he died in 1970 at the age of 84.
