Albert Verwey (born May 15, 1865 in Amsterdam , † March 8, 1937 in Noordwijk aan Zee ) was a Dutch poet who belonged to the Group of Eighty . As a guest of Stefan George he stayed in Munich in 1898 and was also received by the Cosmikers . His poems are part of literary symbolism .

Stefan George

Verwey's acquaintance with Stefan George lasted from 1895 to 1928. After his death in 1933 he published a book about it: Mijn verhouding tot Stefan George, Herinneringen uit de jaren 1895-1928 (1934). Verwey helped Stefan George z. E.g. in the Dutch translation of some verses that the poet Arnaut / Arnaldo Daniello pronounces in Provencal in Canto 26 of Purgatory in Dante's Divine Comedy . After completing his own Dante translation in 1923, he sent a copy to George; George had been working on a partial translation of the Divine Comedy since 1901 .
