Albert als Golem is a short, German silent film play made in 1915 with Albert Paulig in the title role.
action
Albert won the lottery at an art academy and can now, he believes, call 10,000 marks his own. With his girlfriend by the hand, he hurries to the place where the money was issued. He is all the more disappointed when instead of the sum of money, he is given a life-size golem figure. Albert has all the trouble dragging this clay colossus home. There he feels a little scary in the presence of the scary fellow. He covers the golem and temporarily retreats into the bathroom so that he does not have to see this unloved "gain" all the time. Albert falls asleep exhausted.
In his dream he becomes a golem himself. As such, he rushes through the streets and does all sorts of mischief, which the original golem also made when his master left him briefly out of sight. Finally there is a curious encounter between the dream golem Albert and his alter ego Albert Paulig when he is about to go on a boat trip with Golem Albert's bride. When the golem tries to grab the two of them by the bed, he loses his balance and tips over into the nearby water. Albert wakes up in his well-filled bathtub into which he has just dumped while he was sleeping.
Production notes
Albert als Golem was probably made in the autumn of 1915 as a comical reaction to the great success of the Golem film with Paul Wegener, which was released in the same year . The one-act act was 280 meters long and was premiered in 1916. It is not known who directed it.
criticism
“The title is enough to make us laugh. (...) The scene when Paulig transforms into the shape of the golem figure and you can see his features is downright delightful. "
