action

The poet Edmund is married to Klara, and the couple are extremely tight financially. His father, a cheese merchant, thinks Edmund's poetry for cheese and wants the Filius to concentrate on working in his father's business. However, this does not feel the slightest desire. In a newspaper advertisement the couple reads that two young people are wanted as accessories for a wine bar, and so Klara and Edmund apply there. The reward includes a free meal, champagne and oysters. The mood is exuberant, finally no more worries. A little mishap happened to Klara while eating: she swallowed an oyster pearl! A doctor is consulted, who will take the appropriate measures to bring the pearl back to the light of day. With the pearl in hand, Edmund and Klara go to a jeweler who estimates the value of the piece of jewelery at around 30,000 marks.

Edmund and Klara have suddenly become rich and are now starting to splurge. You live in luxury and treat yourself to a new home and furnishings. You will be broke again in no time. To make matters worse, the two, who were previously one heart and one soul, often quarrel. The relationship finally breaks when a penetrating recruiter for Klara's favor, a certain Mr. Grützke, pushes his way into Klara's life. The marriage seems to be over. From now on Edmund devotes himself to the art of poetry without a job, and Klara earns a few marks with sewing work. When Edmund's father heard the name Grützke from his son, he remembers that a man by that name had once really tricked him. The cheese dealer now goes to Klara, and the moment he wants to enter her, the door opens and Herr Grützke, thrown out in a high arc by Klara, ends up in the arms of Edmund's father. Klara takes Klara with him to his cheese dairy, and soon Edmund, who cannot make a living from poetry, also appears there. The couple is reconciled.

criticism

“This splendid comedy, which is characterized by a well-conceived plot, is actually amusing from beginning to end. The main characters, Mannie [sic!] Ziener and Harry Liedtke, play their roles with exuberant humor. "
