Albert von Soest
Albert von Soest (also Albert van Soest , * before 1550 in Soest (?) / Westphalia ; † 1589 in Lüneburg ) was 1567–1588 wood carver ( bielden snider ) in Lüneburg.
Life
Albert von Soest was particularly well known for the oak wood carving in the large council chamber in the Lüneburg town hall , which he carried out together with Gerd Suttmeier .
He has been on the Lüneburg tax lists since 1567 and acquired Lüneburg citizenship in 1583. His artistic work was based on Albrecht Dürer .
Soest created three-dimensional portraits - especially of Reformation personalities - in paper mache . The basis for this were carved wooden models , which then made serial production possible. A paper mache portrait of Martin Luther is on display in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. A counterpart and a portrait of Philipp Melanchthon are in the collection of the State Museum Schwerin .
