Albertanus of Brescia

Albertanus von Brescia (* 1195 in Brescia ; † around 1251) was an Italian lawyer and scholar. He was judge of Brescia and representative of the city in the Lombard League and adviser to the Podestà of Genoa (1243). He was particularly active between 1226 and 1251. He was put on record because Frederick II had him arrested in 1238. In prison he wrote his spiritual treatise De amore Dei et proximi et aliarum rerum et de forma vitae ("On love for God and for neighbor and for other things and the way of life").

He was against all violence, as he had suffered from it even during disputes within his commune . For this reason, he suggested forms of community and organization, through which disputes between parties should be avoided and which should support particularly poor people, since poverty was often the origin of such disputes and acts of violence. He became a great sponsor of social aid organizations, aid associations and hospices.

His treatises are learned disputations . They refer to the ethical precepts of the Bible , but there are also influences from Latin authors - especially Seneca - and Franciscan thought. In Codex B II 6 of the Biblioteca Queriniana in Brescia, which contains Seneca's Epistulae morales , marginal glosses and drawings by his hand have been identified. The books were translated into old Italian in 1268 by Andrea da Grosseto and by Soffredi del Grazia in 1278.

He is considered an early forerunner of Renaissance humanism .
