Alberto Giovannini (composer)

Alberto Giovannini (born August 15, 1842 in Capodistria , according to other information July 15, 1842 in Brazzano , † February 5, 1903 in Milan ) was an Italian composer and music teacher.

Giovannini studied composition with Alberto Mazzucato at the Milan Conservatory from 1860 to 1863 . Works from his student days include the cantata Gli oppressi and Intermezzi to Shakespeare's Hamlet . From 1866 to 1869 he was director of the Istituto filarmonico di Udine . During this time he composed the cantatas Il Cristo (based on a text by Luigi Candotti ) and La liberazione di Venezia ; the latter was performed in 1867 at the Teatro Sociale di Udine in the presence of Vittorio Emanuele II .

From 1870 to 1876 Giovannini was choirmaster at the Municipal Theater in Piacenza, after which he lived in Milan, where he taught singing at the Conservatory. His students included the tenor Francesco Tamagno and the baritone Josip Kašman . The performance of his opera Irene in Modena in 1870 was followed by Adele di Volfinga in Trieste (1880) and Tito Vezio in Rome (1884); I maledetti remained unpublished . In addition, Giovannini composed lyrical songs and piano pieces, wrote opera reviews for the journal La Capitale and the textbooks Corso preparatorio allo studio dell'armonia and Manualetto di nozioni utili a chi vuol dedicarsi al magistero del canto .
