Life

His older brother Giovanni was the founder of the De Agostini Geographic Institute in Novara .

After he entered the order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was ordained a priest in 1909, he lived from 1910 as a missionary in Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia between Chile and Argentina. He was the first to climb some peaks and glaciers there. Others were named after him after he discovered them.

In January / February 1931 he, Egidio Feruglio and the mountain guides Croux and Bron were the first to cross the Campo de Hielo Sur , starting from Lago Viedma (Argentina) to the Patagonian Tunnels of the Pacific Ocean and back.

The missionary had a deep connection with the residents of the Tierra de Fuego, especially the Selknam .

He left 22 books and written works in Italian, German and Spanish, a collection of several hundred photographs and a documentary film, each about Patagonia and Tierra de Fuego as well as the locals.

After returning to Italy, he died on Christmas Day 1960 in Turin.
