Alberto Nani

Alberto Nani Caputo (born on May 15, 1913 in Buenos Aires ; died on June 23, 1989 there ) was an Argentine ichthyologist .

Life

Nani studied zoology and worked from 1931 as a student assistant in the department of ichthyology of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia in Buenos Aires . After completing his studies, he joined the museum in 1937. From 1942 to 1947 Nani took part in six research trips to the Argentine Antarctic Territory . From 1959 to 1966 he was Professor Asociado at the Institute of Biology at the Faculty of Science at the Universidad de Buenos Aires . From 1966 Nani worked in the National Fisheries Directorate.

With his colleague María Luisa Fuster de Plaza , Nani published the first description of Hypophthalmus oremaculatus in 1947 , an economically important species of aerial catfish that is widespread in large parts of South America . The first description of Notomyxine , a species of hagfish , followed in 1951 along with Francisco S. Gneri .

Alberto Nani was honored with the species name of Eptatretus nanii Wisner & CB McMillan , in 1988, a hagfish from the waters off Valparaíso . The honor was given for his early research on the hagfish of Chile, for his technical support of the authors and for the provision of comparative copies.
