Alberto Orrego Luco

Alberto Orrego Luco (born April 20, 1854 in Valparaíso , † June 2, 1931 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter .

Orrego began his career as a painter as an autodidact, but was honored with an honorable mention at the Exposición del Mercado Central in 1872 for his first works. The following year he went to Paris with his brother-in-law, the painter Pedro Lira , to study medicine at the Sorbonne . However, he broke off his studies and became a student of Alexandre Cabanel at the Académie Julian .

Canabel lived in Venice from 1880 to 1890. Here he married the painter Carlina Rossi Loredano in 1883 . In 1888 he entered the diplomatic service and became consul of the Chilean government. In this function he then worked in Seville, from 1892 in Genoa and from 1915 in Rome. In 1919 he returned to Chile, where he devoted himself entirely to painting.

The focus of his work was landscape and marine painting. He has received many awards for his works; Retrospectives of his works took place in the exhibition hall of the Ministry of Education (1971) and at the Instituto Cultural de Las Condes (1979) in Santiago. Several of his paintings are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes .
