The ELBE to BURGK were standard gauge tank locomotives of the Albertsbahn AG for the operation of the Hänichen coal branch line . The Royal Saxon State Railways classified the locomotives in class H VIIIb T after they were nationalized . They were retired by 1893.

history

Originally, locomotives made by the Dresden manufacturer W. Bayer were intended for the operation of the Hänichen coal branch , but they turned out to be unsuitable. The narrow 80-meter radius of the coal railway was impassable for the test locomotive FRIEDRICH AUGUST because of its too large wheelbase.

The Hartmann company in Chemnitz finally offered the Albertsbahn AG a double-coupled locomotive, which was designed with a leading bogie. This construction had the required arcuate flexibility and performance. In the spring of 1857 Hartmann delivered the three ordered locomotives. They were given the names ELBE , WINDBERG and STEIGER .

The locomotives proved their worth on the winding and incline-rich route. The pulling power was sufficient to safely drive a total of ten loaded 5-ton coal hunts down into the valley. In 1858 a fourth locomotive with the name FREIBERG was delivered, in 1866 a fifth with the name BURGK .

After the nationalization of Albert Bahn AG all five locomotives in 1868 came into the existence of the Royal Saxon State Railways, where they henceforth in the genus H VIIIb T were arranged.

In 1877, all five locomotives were given a major overhaul. Apparently the steam boilers were also replaced. The boiler operating pressure, which was raised to 8.5 atü after the conversion, makes this seem safe.

The locomotives were retired from 1885 to 1893. From then on, operations on the coal railway were handled by the class VII T double-coupled tank locomotives .
