The Albertville series was a passenger and cargo ship type made by J. Cockerill SA in Hoboken for the Compagnie Maritime Belge (Lloyd Royal) SA (CMB). Since all the ship's name on - ville ended after cities were Belgian Congo named ships internationally known as Ville-Boats referred. In Belgium one spoke of the Congo boats (Dutch: Congo boats).

history

The combination ships were intended for the liner service between Belgium and the colony of the Belgian Congo and continued on this route regularly until the country became independent in 1960. The lead ship Albertville ran on 1 July 1947 by the stack and was put into service in May 1948. The Leopoldville , which was delivered in the same year , was sold to the Cie. Maritime Congolaise (from 1972 Cie. Maritime du Zaire ) sold, for which she sailed as PE Lumumba until 1973 . The Elisabethville , which was put into service in 1949, suffered a total loss on March 20, 1968 due to fire on board before it could be sold and was scrapped at the end of the year. The fourth ship, the 1950 Baudoinville , was renamed Thysville in 1957 and sold in 1961. Most recently she drove as Australasia between Brisbane and Sydney from 1965 to 1972 . The last ship to be handed over was the Charlesville in 1951 . It was acquired by DSR in 1967 and renamed Georg Büchner . She served as a cargo and training ship, from 1977 as a stationary training ship and boarding school. Since 2003, she has been in the Rostock city harbor as the only surviving ship in the series and was used as a hotel ship until December 2012. In January 2013 it should be sold to Lithuania for demolition. An attempt to take over by the “Traditionsschiff Rostock” association failed due to the financing, meanwhile “Watererfgoed Vlaanderen” in Antwerp is trying to rescue the last remaining Congo boat. On 28 May 2013, the Georg Büchner was with a slight list to starboard by the Polish tractor Ajaks dragged out of Rostock and was located in the Baltic Sea on the way to Lithuania. On the evening of May 30, 2013, the Georg Büchner sank north of the Hel peninsula (near Danzig ), the circumstances are not yet known.

technology

The ships could carry 248 passengers in one class and had a crew of 140. The marine diesel engines built by Cockerill under a Burmeister & Wain license had 7200 hp when the ships were delivered. In 1957, the performance was increased to 9250 hp during conversion work and thus an increase in speed from 15.5 to up to 17.5 knots was achieved.
