The Albrecht-Dürer-Gymnasium Hagen is a municipal high school in the city of Hagen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The grammar school has existed since 1915 and is attended by around 500 students. These are taught by around 40 teachers.

school

The school is divided into the test level (grades 5 and 6), the intermediate level (grades 7–9) and the upper level . The test level and the intermediate level form the secondary level I (grades 5-9), the upper level forms the upper secondary level and consists of the three grades EF (introductory phase), Q1 (qualification phase 1) and Q2 (qualification phase 2).

In the lower secondary level , classes 5–9 are taught in 2, rarely 3 classes. A class consists of an average of 31 students. In contrast to most other grammar schools, students have a choice in the field of foreign languages from grade 5. You can either go through grade 5 with English as the only foreign language and then from grade 6 take Latin or French as a second foreign language. Alternatively, you can learn English and Latin in parallel from year 5 onwards. At the end of grade 7, compulsory elective II is chosen. Latin, computer science and natural sciences (a combination of computer science, biology, chemistry and physics) and, if not already chosen, French are offered here. In the upper secondary level , after the introductory phase, the secondary school leaving certificate (Mittelreife) can be obtained. After the introductory phase , you will receive the Latinum if you have achieved a satisfactory performance in Latin . Then the qualification phase begins (2 years). From qualification phase 1 onwards, lessons are attended in advanced courses (five hours) and basic courses (three hours). The half-year grades are converted into points (point scale from 0 to 15) and count towards the Abitur. After completing qualification phase 2 (Q2), you have acquired the general university entrance qualification with the Abitur . In addition, the school-based part of the advanced technical college entrance qualification can also be awarded under certain conditions.

The Albrecht-Dürer-Gymnasium cooperates in the upper level with the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium in Hagen.

Buildings, grounds and surroundings

The school building originally consisted of three parts, the actual school building with the classrooms, a gym and a residential building for teachers or school management.

In the 1960s the school received a new gymnasium and the former was converted into an auditorium. In the mid-1970s, all state schools in North Rhine-Westphalia became the responsibility of the municipalities, in this case the city of Hagen . As part of this change of agency, an extension with additional classrooms and specialist rooms was created. This part of the building was put into operation in the summer of 1979.

At the turn of the millennium, the former residential building was rebuilt and now houses the administration and the teachers' room. A school garden was also built as part of this renovation .

The last structural measure was the construction of a cafeteria for the distribution of a warm lunch and care beyond the class time (optional offer).

  • Otto Bußmann made a wooden sculpture in the stairwell between the ground floor and the first floor with the title Boy with a Lizard .
  • The outer facade of the auditorium (formerly the gym) is decorated with a relief by the same artist.
  • Another relief adorns the gable side of the administration wing (former residential building) and shows a human head flanked by a bird of prey and an owl.
  • In the music room there are plaster replicas of parts of the pulpit from the cathedral of Florence by Luca della Robbia .
  • In the corridors there are frames and showcases with current works by the students from the art class.
