Albrecht Appelhans

Albrecht Appelhans (born December 13, 1900 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 4, 1975 in Göppingen - Bartenbach ) was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator .

From 1924 to 1928 he was a student of Ernst Schneidler at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts . Then he worked in Berlin as a press draftsman, freelance graphic artist and painter. In the mid-1930s he resumed studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and became a student of the Swiss painter Heinrich Altherr . In 1938 he became Ernst Schneidler's assistant. From 1939 to 1940 he did military service, then married Else Bloch and again became Schneidler's assistant. From 1941 to 1945 he had to do military service again.

From 1943 to 1949 he was employed as an artistic teacher at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts . He became a member of the Association of Visual Artists. From 1949 to 1961 he lived in Stuttgart as a freelance illustrator and painter. For him painting was "like music". In 1961 he married Katja-Erica Schultz from Saint Petersburg and became Walter Brudi's assistant .

From 1962 to 1969 he was a professor at the Stuttgart Art Academy and succeeded Hermann Sohn in a class for painting. Then he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class . In 1971 he moved from Stuttgart to Esslingen, where he fell ill two years later.

In 1978, the Hans-Thoma-Gesellschaft in Reutlingen showed for the first time a comprehensive retrospective on the work of the painter and draftsman, in which in particular the artist's painterly work, which had hitherto remained almost unknown, was recorded.
