Albrecht Salzer (born November 30, 1944 in Wuppertal ) is a German chemist ( inorganic chemistry , organometallic chemistry , complex chemistry ).

Life

Salzer studied chemistry from 1965 at the University of Zurich with a diploma in 1971 and a doctorate under Helmut Werner in 1974. He completed his habilitation in complex chemistry in 1982 and initially became a private lecturer at the University of Zurich. From 1992 until his retirement in 2015 he was a full professor for inorganic chemistry at RWTH Aachen University . In the meantime, he took on a visiting professorship at the University of Cape Town in 1996/97 .

Salzer dealt with organometallic chemistry, especially metal p complexes, i.e. those with aromatic and olefinic ligands . On the one hand, the reactivity of the ligands can be controlled by the type of metal complex and, on the other hand, the reactivity of the metal center can be controlled by the ligands. He used metal p complexes in the synthesis of natural products and in catalyst and stoichiometric applications.

In 1986 Salzer and Christoph Elschenbroich published the textbook Organometallchemie , for which they received the 1988 Literature Prize of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie . The English edition was published in 1989. In 1984 he received the Alfred Werner Prize of the Swiss Chemical Society.

In 1991 Salzer became a member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and a member of its Commission for Inorganic Nomenclature. Since 1994 he has been in the Collaborative Research Center 380 Asymmetric Syntheses with Chemical and Biological Methods and he is a member of the Graduate College Methods in Asymmetric Synthesis in the Catalysis Association of North Rhine-Westphalia .
