The Alcáçovas ( Portuguese Ribeira das Alcáçovas ) is a river in the Alentejo region of Portugal that flows through the districts of Évora and Setúbal . It arises from the confluence of the Valverde ( Portuguese Ribeira de Valverde ) and São Brissos ( Portuguese Ribeira de São Brissos ) about 15 kilometers southwest of the city of Évora , then flows in a westerly direction and finally flows into the Sado above the city of Alcácer do Sal .
About six kilometers before it flows into the Sado, the Alcáçovas is dammed up into a reservoir by the Pego do Altar dam.
