Alea ( Greek Αλέα ( f. Sg. )) Is a Greek village with (2011) 103 inhabitants in the Peloponnese region at the foot of the Xerovouni. From 1912 to 2010 Alea was an independent rural community (kinotita) in the prefecture of Argolis , which was expanded in 1997 to include the districts of Skotini (348 inhabitants), Agios Nikolaos (139), and Frousiouna (69). With effect from January 1, 2011, Alea was incorporated into the newly created municipality of Argos-Mycenae , where it has since formed a municipality.
In antiquity, there was a fortified settlement of the same name around 3 km northeast of today's town on a hill. Pausanias Periegetes testifies that an annual festival called Skierias was held here, during which women were scourged. At that time the border between Arcadia and Argolida ran a little further east, so that Alea belonged to Arcadia at that time. In the imperial period Alea was counted to the Argolis.
The eponymous village ▼ was called Bougiati ( Greek Μπουγιάτι ) until 1928 and was renamed after the ancient city ▼ .
