Alejandro Cercas Alonso (born May 25, 1949 in Ibahernando , Spain ) is a Spanish politician of the social democratic party PSOE and a member of the European Parliament .

After studying law, which he finished in 1974, Cercas began his professional career as a legal advisor. In 1977 he became an official of the Spanish Social Security. During his studies he was a member of the PSOE , which at that time - during the Franco dictatorship - was still banned. 1974 to 1977 he was Secretary General of the PSOE youth organization Juventudes Socialistas .

After the transition to democracy , Cercas was elected to the Spanish parliament in the 1982 elections, where he was, among other things, chairman of the social committee. In 1999 he resigned from his mandate to instead run for the 1999 European elections, in which he was elected to the European Parliament . Here he is a member of the Group of the Party of European Socialists and of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs .

In 2008, he played a key role in the European Parliament's first reading rejecting an amendment to the Working Time Directive approved by the Council of the EU , which would have allowed weekly working hours of a maximum of 65 (instead of 48) hours.

In 2010 he signed the Spinelli Group's Manifesto for a Federal Europe.
