Alejandro Magariños Cervantes (born October 3, 1825 in Montevideo , † 1893 in Rocha ) was a Uruguayan politician , writer , university professor and lawyer .

Life

Magariños Cervantes, who completed his law studies in Spain and graduated with a doctorate, returned to Uruguay in 1855 after a subsequent long trip through France. In the same year he started working as a lawyer and became Consul General of Buenos Aires . A year later he returned to Montevideo after President Bernardo Prudencio Berro had appointed him prosecutor. After the victory of Venancio Flores in the assembly of 1865, however, he decided to emigrate again to Buenos Aires. However, under the presidency of Lorenzo Batlle , he returned to his homeland and took over the post of finance minister after his appointment. At the same time he started teaching at the law faculty of the Universidad de la República. From January 14, 1869 to March 12 of the same year, he headed the Foreign Ministry in his home country for a few weeks . In 1878, during the reign of Lorenzo Latorre , he became rector of the Universidad de la República and held this position until 1880. After all, he still held a seat in the Senate until his death in 1893. He was also one of the most important Uruguayan writers of the 19th century.
