Aleksandar Kukolj

Aleksandar Kukolj (born September 9, 1991 in Prague ) is a Serbian judoka . In 2017, Kukolj was European middleweight champion.

Athletic career

The 1.94 m wide Kukolj joined by 2010 in light middleweight, the weight class of up to 81 kg. In 2009 he was seventh in the U20 World Championships. In 2010 he won his first Serbian championship. He finished second at the U20 European Championships in 2010 and won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships.

From 2011 Kukolj competed in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. At the European Championships in 2012 he lost to the French Romain Buffet in the quarter-finals , and he lost the battle for a bronze medal to the German Christophe Lambert . Shortly afterwards, he won his first World Cup tournament in Lisbon. The following year he reached fifth place again at the 2013 European Championships in Budapest after defeats to the Russians Kirill Denisov and Kirill Voprosov . At the Mediterranean Games in Mersin, he defeated the French Axel Clerget in the semi-finals and the Italians in the finalWalter Facente . Two weeks later, he finished fifth at the Universiade in Kazan. At the end of 2013 he lost to the Hungarian Krisztián Tóth in the final of the U23 European Championships .

The 2015 European Championships were held as part of the 2015 European Games in Baku. Kukolj finished seventh after losing to Krisztián Tóth and the Greeks Ilias Iliadis . The following year, he finished fifth at the 2016 European Championships in Kazan after losing to French Alexandre Iddir and Poland's Piotr Kuczera . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Kukolj defeated the Slovenian Mihael Žgank in the first round , and in the second round he was eliminated from the eventual Olympic champion Mashu Baker from Japan. At the end of 2016 he won the Grand Slam tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo.

Aleksandar Kukolj celebrated his greatest success so far at the European Championships in Warsaw in 2017 . In the semifinals he defeated Mammadali Mehdiyev from Azerbaijan and in the final he won against Axel Clerget. At the 2017 World Championships he lost to the Slovenian Mihael Žgank in the semi-finals and lost the battle for bronze against the Georgian Uschangi Margiani . Nemanja Majdov won the title, and in 2017 both the European and World Middleweight Champions came from Serbia. In 2018, Kukolj was eliminated in the first round of both the European Championships and the World Championships . He won a bronze medal at the 2018 Military World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
