Alere Inc. is a global medical device company based in Waltham , Massachusetts , United States . Alere is one of the leading providers of medical diagnostics in the areas of blood gas analysis, drug testing, gynecology , cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and oncology .
history
The company was founded in 2001 and initially operated under the name Inverness Medical Innovations, Inc. and changed its name to Alere Inc. in 2010.

Alere employs around 9,700 people in various subsidiaries worldwide. In America, Alere operates in the United States, Canada , Argentina , Brazil and Colombia . In Asia it is present in China , India , Indonesia , Israel , Japan , Malaysia , Singapore , South Korea and Taiwan . Alere is also represented by subsidiaries in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa as well as in Western Europe.
In Germany, the subsidiary Alere GmbH is based in Cologne , North Rhine-Westphalia , and Alere Technologies GmbH is based in Jena , Thuringia . The company's headquarters are in Linz in Austria and in Wädenswil in Switzerland .
Acquisition by Abbott
On October 3, 2017, Alere Inc. was taken over by its competitor Abbott Laboratories and has since acted as Abbott Rapid DX (Diagnostics).
