Alessandra Moretti (born June 24, 1973 in Vicenza ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). She was a member of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2015 and again since 2019 .

life and career

As a youth, Moretti was the secretary of the Vicenza Students' Union. She graduated from Urbino University with a law degree with a thesis in criminology . She then worked as a family law attorney.

In 2008 she was elected to the Vicenza City Council as the top candidate for a center-left citizen list. She acted as the city's deputy mayor and councilor for education and youth policy. From 2009 she was a member of the national board of the Partito Democratico, where she was responsible for educational policy. Pier Luigi Bersani made her a spokeswoman for the party after his election as chairman. In the parliamentary elections in 2013 , she entered the Chamber of Deputies as a representative of the constituency of Veneto 1 .

For the 2014 European elections , she was elected to the European Parliament in the constituency of Northeast Italy with over 230,000 preferential votes . There she belongs to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D) and was Deputy Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Iran from 2014 to 2015 and a member of the Legal Affairs Committee and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality . She resigned her mandate in the EU Parliament on February 1, 2015 in order to run for the regional election in Veneto in May 2015 as the top candidate of the center-left alliance. However, it was defeated by the incumbent Luca Zaia from Lega Nord with 22.7% of the votes , who received a good 50%. She then belonged to the Venetian Regional Council as an opposition representative, where she was leader of the PD group until December 2016. She was re-elected to the European Parliament in the 2019 European elections. She is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and is the delegate for relations with Japan.
