Alessandro Birolini

Alessandro Birolini (born September 13, 1940 in Lugano ) is a Swiss electrical engineer and university lecturer.

Life

Birolini completed an apprenticeship as an electrician and then studied electrical engineering at the ETH Zurich . In 1974 he did his doctorate under Ernst Baumann on a topic from stochastics . He then switched to industry at Contraves AG in Zurich and from 1979 he set up the Swiss VLSI test laboratory in Neuchâtel . In 1985 he completed his habilitation and in 1986 was appointed professor for reliability engineering at the ETH Zurich. In 1999 he retired.

Birolini has made significant contributions to reliability technology in numerous publications , in particular to the application of stochastic processes. His research area also included fault-tolerant systems, test strategies and failure mechanisms of electronic components. He is the author of an internationally recognized standard work in his field and has received numerous honors, e. B. the IEEE Third Millennium Medal . He is a full individual member of the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences .
