Alessandro Del Vita (born January 15, 1885 in Arezzo ; † June 28, 1961 there ) was an Italian art critic , art historian and museum director .

Life

The work of the researcher Alessandro Del Vita, older brother of the ceramic artist Antonio (1889–1975), concentrated his entire life on his Aretine homeland. Turning to Italian fascism at an early age (in 1922 he led one of the two groups from Arezzo on the march on Rome ; in 1925 he signed the manifesto of the fascist intellectuals initiated by Giovanni Gentile , with which he professed his support for Benito Mussolini ), he became in the 1920s until the suppression of the fascists director of the Museo Archeologico , the art gallery and the Biblioteca della Fraternita dei Laici in Arezzo. In addition, he acted as director of the Casa di Giorgio Vasari and founded the magazine Il Vasari in 1927 , which quickly established itself as an important organ of research by Giorgio Vasari and the art of the Cinquecento. He was also a central figure in La Torre magazine as well as the fascist magazine Giovinezza . Del Vita's achievements in the history of art also include the reorganization of the Museo Civico di Castiglion Fiorentino and the efforts to protect art as part of his office as Presidente dell'Ente Provinciale del Turismo in the last years of the war.

After 1945, the researcher, who received numerous awards and honorary memberships from renowned academies (including Ispettore onorario ai monumenti e scavi di Arezzo , Socio of the Accademia Petrarca di lettere, arti e scienze and Socio onorario of the Accademia Etrusca di Cortona ) no longer held an important position, numerous awards and honorary memberships were withdrawn from him. He is buried in Arezzo together with his wife Conforta Chianucci (16 Mar 1896 - 18 March 1988), whom he married in 1923.
